AJC 2011 Itinerary 22 - ROAD TEST or BRAKE! SOPHIE! BRAKE!

AJC 2011 Itinerary 22: ROAD TEST or BRAKE! SOPHIE! BRAKE!
When Sophie heard about our plans for traveling to Italy, she decided that she could at least handle a Vespa and zoom around with us, rather than having to walk everywhere.
Best of all: you can’t pack much luggage on a Vespa!
(There was No Way she was going to be a Pack Animal on that trip)
.
Sophie had been taking Secret Driving Lessons from her friend Kevin the Kiwi who works as a Driving and Road Tester for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
(He originally wanted to be a Flight Instructor, but being a small flightless bird *, that was ruled out much to his disappointment).
So other than a few minor mishaps such as getting tangled in a BLACKBERRY BUSH and confusing the ACCELERATOR with the BRAKE, Sophie got her LEARNERS and proudly Vroomed Vroomed home to show me.
(Good thing the Garage Door was OPEN at the time as I still could hear Kevin yelling: BRAKE! SOPHIE, BRAAKKKKKE!)
**the following is based on a True Story of me teaching a friend to drive again after 7 years absence behind the wheel – names changed of course to protect the guilty**

AJC 2011 Itinerary 21: Well! Isn’t that the PITS!?
I suppose it doesn’t help matters when a Certain Curious Cowichan Camel named Sophie constantly opened the oven door,
‘just to check on things’..
oh.oh.
We now know, that opening oven doors on a Rising Chocolate Souffle cake is NOT a Good Thing To Do!
And of course, she would pick the day to do it when I had invited the Bridge Club over for a game.
Sophie by way of apology, rescued the situation by finding the recipe for FALLEN Chocolate Souffle cake.
We called it that, sliced it up, and the Bridge Club never knew. (shhh don’t tell)

Finding Our Way Home

To say it was a Labyrinthian Journey to our Island Home at Quail Hill is indeed an understatement.
We went through the Move From Hell, to being literally Homeless and a bit panic stricken in a motel at 2am, with a frantic cat who did NOT LIKE being caged!
So no, that is not a typo at No. 5 – it was exactly a DAY after we moved out of our Condo (and catching the last ferry to the Island!) that our Realtor Janet helped Quail Hill find us the Next Day!
It was the 7th Listing, on the 7th Day, in the 7th Month, 2007!
(I think the word you might be looking for is ‘fated’..grin)
*
The best description of why we came back here, after a 25 year absence toiling in the City, is found in Eileen’s song.
ISLAND HOME
Sung and composed by Islander: Eileen McGann
From her CD: Beyond the Storm

The tall Firs wave and look out on the morning
They shake themselves a touch
And gaze down on the bay -
An Eagle cries and circles round the mountain
The dawn light paints the water blue
As Orcas rise to play.

Chorus:
O what could be more beautiful?
What could touch my heart?
What place on earth
Could keep me from this part
I call Home?

And in a place of dark primeval glory
The Old Ones stand and guard the land
Where they began a millennium ago-
The poets Dream
A Painter’s Inspiration
The Joy of Life on every side
As Nature meant it so.

When evening falls and shadows gather round us
The Sea-Lions fish in twilight’s glow
As Herons float back to their nest
The only sound
The wind among the treetops
An ocean’s whispered lullaby
As I go to my rest.
